Treehouse community playground
Accessible Play for ALL!
The Treehouse Community Playground will be the first of its kind in Antioch and the surrounding communities. A little over two and a half years ago, a group of residents from Antioch and the surrounding area recognized the need for an accessible playground to be built so that ALL children can play together. The initiative which is spearheaded by NorthBridge Church, who dedicated the property to the community, is near completion.
Why build an accessible playground?
According to the US Census and CDC, it is estimated that 10% or more of all children under the age of 18 are disabled, yet the majority of recreational options and playgrounds are NOT accessible.
Play is a critical part of physical, emotional, mental and social development for every child. Especially for children with disabilities. Play is therapy - both physical and emotional. On the physical side, children's muscles need to be exercised just like anyone else's. Most importantly, on the emotional side, children need to interact and socialize with their peers. Simply put, kids need to play with other kids. Yet, for so many with disabilities, their days are spent with parents, doctors, nurses, therapists and other adults. An accessible playground allows children with disabilities to swing, slide and climb with their friends - as well as their siblings and parents - which is something they may have never been able to do before.
