1 Samuel 13: 8-14

Message Big Idea –  What happens when a culture of customer service hits the church? What happens when we, the followers of Jesus, have expectations and demands of God?  We can unlearn Consumer Christianity as we recognize our own consumer tendencies and choose to trust God with everything.

Reflect on the following sequence of questions. If you are doing this with others, share your responses with them.

LEAN IN >> Think about it.

  • What are you grateful for this week? What are you struggling with?
  • Recall a time when, looking back, you rushed into making a decision or purchasing something that ended up costing you in the long run. What led you to make a rushed decision?

LOOK DOWN >> Read the following passages and discuss or reflect on the  the corresponding questions:

  • Read 1 Samuel 13:8-14 (Read twice – ESV and either NLT or Message)
  • Briefly retell the passage in your own words.
  • What word or phrase “jumped off the page” and intrigued you the most?

LOOK OUT >> Connect the world of the Bible to our culture.

  • Consumer mentality says “I need to get this or that now or I may not ever get it…”.  In what ways do people become “Consumer Christians”? How might this influence the way people relate to God? Pray to God?

LOOK IN >> Go straight to the heart of the matter.

  • In what ways do you find yourself being impatient when it comes to hearing from God or receiving direction or guidance from God in a particular situation?
  • How often do you seek God for an honest examination of your heart and mind? How can you make this a regular practice in your spiritual formation?

LIVE IT OUT >> Put it into action.

  • This week,
  • This week, print off and use the attached “Prayer of Examen” to guide your prayer time. Select a quiet time during the day to use this spiritual formation practice to help shape your heart after God’s own heart.
  • Journal your thoughts. If you feel comfortable, email Pastor Bill and let him know what and how God is moving in your heart during this “Prayer of Examen”. (bill@northbridgechurch.org)
