Mark 1: 16-20

Message Big Idea –  The church, as One family, provides an opportunity to join One mission. That mission is to invite others to experience and respond to God’s love by centering our life on the person and work of Jesus.

Reflect on the following sequence of questions. If you are doing this with others, share your responses with them.

LEAN IN >> Think about it.

  • What is the most prestigious or special event you have ever been invited to attend?

LOOK DOWN >> Read the following passages and discuss or reflect on the  the corresponding questions:

  • Read Mark 1:16-20 (Read twice – ESV and either NLT or Message)
  • Briefly retell the passage in your own words.
  • What word or phrase “jumped off the page” and intrigued you the most?

LOOK OUT >> Connect the world of the Bible to our culture.

  • Name 3 of the most coveted events people today desire to be invited to? Why are these events so desired by the culture?

LOOK IN >> Go straight to the heart of the matter.

  • In Pastor Mark’s message he detailed what we are ‘not invited to’ become. We are not invited to be (1) nice church people, (2) Bible scholars, (3) good Americans, (4) comfortable suburbanite. Which on this list most hit home?
  • Also, in the message Pastor Mark listed 4 how to’s of fishing (1) Go where the people are (2) make it a lifestyle (3) teach others how to reach people (4) go to the unreached areas.  Which on this list strikes you as vitally important?

LIVE IT OUT >> Put it into action.

  • Identify the unreached areas in your circle of influence. Take time to pray this week about how God might use you to reach the unreached.
  • Pinpoint one person who you have modeled your ‘fishing’ techniques after. Send an email or text message of encouragement to them this week.
  • In prayer, ask God to reveal any area where you might have become ‘fuzzy’ on the original mission God intended for you. Ask for wisdom and help to stay focused and on mission.
